Traps and Trapping

Being a Professional Molecatcher I only use traps, these traps vary for different circumstances but my preference is the half barrel (duffus) trap which is completely underground, I find a much higher success rate with half barrel traps and they are completely humane which should be the greatest concern to any Professional Mole Catcher. The traps themselves should be made to specific measurements and strengths to be humane, strong springs being essential to a mole trap. Knowing when to discard a trap when the springs become weak as eventually they do being set under pressure for long periods.

The use of live catch traps for moles is something I feel strongly should be banned along with the strychnine ban. A mole as a fast metabolism so has to eat at least two thirds of his body weight a day. When trapped in this live catch trap the mole is becoming weaker by the minute and slowly dying under stressful conditions, if the trap is checked to late a horrible death has occurred. If checked to often you will not catch, but even if the trap was checked and the mole was still alive there is not much can be done, by law the mole can not be relocated unless a suitable environment is found.  A suitable environment would mean another moles tunnel system and moles are very territorial, the weak, half starved, stressed mole that’s just been relocated has not got the happy ending.

Most frequently asked questions I get:

  • How many moles do I have?
  • Will I get more moles again?
  • Why don’t my neighbour’s have moles?
  • Where do they come from?

Well the answers are:

The amount of moles varies on location, but your average small garden with lets say 8-10 molehills will normally be the result of just the one or two moles, but moles, although territorial can live side by side given enough room. So depending on the size of the feeding area will determine the amount of moles to an area.

You can remove one mole just to get another move in, this again depends on location. If you live in a built up area you have less chance of reinfestation than if your garden is surrounded by woods, hedges, fields, rough ground, or the likes of golf courses, neighboring moles are always ready to move into a vacant prime feeding ground.

When your garden seems to be the only one being picked on by moles, its because of the conditions of your soil,. You will find you have a good ph level,  what gardeners want, but with good soil comes worms which are the moles favorite and essential food source and so comes the mole. Mole commonly avoid the poor soiled gardens which hold less food sources.

There are an estimated 30 million moles, but the truth is nobody really knows, the surveys that have been done are really just guesses, there has certainly been a rise in the mole population since the ban of stychnine, which was the reason for the near extinction of the Professional Molecatcher.

Rates

Surrey Mole Control works on a no mole no fee basis, but we like to survey the mole infested site first. Sometimes the no mole no fee method of payment can be to expensive,. If you have for instance a 2 acre garden or paddock in a rural location which is prone to reinfestation, a yearly contract would be cheaper and more efficient way of controlling the moles on your property. I am also available as a Molecatcher for work on an hourly rate for extreme cases.
